Happy 4th of July. It's been a fantastic 234 years so far..here's to many more!!!

Hi folks.....Happy 4th of July. I hope everyone is having an awesome day today...lots of fun, friends, food, family etc.  This lovely photo is courtesy of Prairie Flower Farm. Check out their blog here.  Thanks for letting me borrow this photo.  It's really beautiful.  I went to church this morning and had a fantastic time.  I'm going to try and catch some fireworks tonight....Why? WEll, when the whole nation parties down...fireworks are a necessary part of the day's festivities...AND I want to try out the "fireworks" button on my camera!!!

My dad and I went to church this morning. He treated me to coffee from The Human Bean this morning...."Kahlua Madness"...yummy!!! Alright, remember last Sunday?  I told you I'd go to church and get photos as proof.  Well, here you go....:) :) :) I don't think I ever told you all the story of how my dad and I moved into the apartment we're living in now...I'll save that for another time. The short version is because our old apartment had "black mold" and it was slowly hurting us. Anyway, we moved to the other side of the apartment complex and this sweet little tabby cat tries to adopt us...Well, "Stubby" as I call her...she's still trying to get in.  Here are a couple of photos I snapped of her today...In the first one she's looking at the door...just waiting for my dad to let her in...even though we were on our way to church...


Here she's trying to look less obvious...I tried getting a photo of her from inside the apartment.  She saw me in the window and stood up on her hind paws..meeowing extra super cute.."let me in, let me in..I'm a cute furry kitty with extra love...let me in"..That's how I translated her meeows!!! She actually belongs to a neighbor a few doors down.


Here's the church I attend...Mountain Christian Fellowship. Click here to check out the church website.  The building the church is in now used to be a bank for many, many years. Then they moved...and some people from Applegate Christian Fellowship bought the old bank building in the heart of downtown and converted it into a church.  It's a really good influence in the area...There's even a coffee shop to the right of this photo...just on the other side of the railroad tracks..You can pick up a nice cup of joe before and after church and during the week too...I'm telling you, this is not a typical church building from the outside...


I said I'd get a photo as proof that I was actually in church today. Here it is...What's funny is you can see my dad's reflection in the picture frame. He's the one taking the photo. I didn't notice it till I posted it here this afternoon!!!


Here's the sign for the church...one of them anyway.  It's a neat church...the people love God and love each other...which is just how it should be!!!  Parking is limited at the church itself..so they reserve that for elderly and handicapped. However, there are plenty of places around town to park.  There are some great old buildings here..I'll have to snap some photos one of these days...

Some pretty pink flowers nearby....I'm always taking pictures of flowers...God's handiwork!!!


Just took a random photo here. The building no longer serves Veterans of Foreign Wars..I don't think so anyway...but they've left the original paint up there...It's now being used as a restaurant, if I'm not mistaken.


This is the inside of the prayer room at church. When the building was still a bank...this used to be the money vault. Now it's the "prayer vault" as we affectionately call it. You can come in for prayer, have someone pray for you or have a private time of communion if you'd like...

This is the door leading into the prayer room.  It was a former money vault as I mentioned earlier. The door stands open permanently...but it's kind of funny...because I don't know of any other church that has a prayer vault...hee hee hee :) :)


This was taken well before the church service started.  This is the front of the room. It's very simple...nothing fancy..just the necessary things and Jesus Christ...the primary reason we come to worship!!!!

My dad and I sat in the very back row of chairs that you see at the very bottom of this photo. There was an elderly couple sitting right in front of us...really cute.  They were old and had hands that were wrinkly and knobby like a 100 year old pear tree...but there was an awful lot of beauty in those hands. During the singing, the husband was trying to raise his hands in worship. He could only keep them up for a few seconds and had to rest his hands again. One of the ushers came and held his hand up for him!!! I just about lost it in a pool of tears here...because there he was with his wife...in their twilight years...still worshiping Jesus..and raising old tired hands to Him!!!! It was a simple gesture but I'm telling even now my eyes are starting to tear up... I won't be forgetting this simple act of true worship and beauty...never ever, ever!!!



Our pastor veered off topic for today...and spoke from James 3 about the tongue and gossip etc..and how it can be used to destroy and to build up. I pray that we would always use our tongues/mouths to build each other up and encourage each other.  Sometimes we...and I'll count myself in this group...we are the best at injuring our own...the sheep bite is sometimes much harsher then the wolf bite...I pray that I'll never be one who uses my tongue to praise God one moment and then say mean things the next moment...I want to love God and love people.  It's that simple!!!  There was a lot more I learned today...took notes!!!

All of the announcements, events etc are put up on the walls...and well, this one if very important...about where to go to get some good coffee!!!!....If you know me by now...I love me a good cup of joe...coffee!!!..Keeps us awake during the sermons...hee hee hee :) :)


This was stamped all over the  pavement outside the church..specifically around the train tracks. Now this has been here much, much longer than the church...but I like the word...so I took a photo!!!!

Okay, it's Sunday and that means time for some memory verses...Put on the armor y'all and memorize that Scripture. It does a body good...:) :) :) I had to post two today..both of these verses came up during church this morning...both touched my heart. They're short and easy to memorize!!!

The first one is especially appropriate for today...from the Author of true freedom!!!!

This one I love too...the whole verse is good, but especially this last half...and it's just as true today, as it was during the days of Samuel!!! I couldn't find a photo I really liked...but I like these roses...so here you go :) :) :)..Enjoy...

I love me a good yard sale & I've got the Depression Era glass blues.

Happy 4th of July Eve....:) :) :) :) Our great country will be celebrating 234 wonderful years of existence :) :) :) Do you all have any exciting plans for the 4th? I'm going to try and catch some fireworks. My camera has a special function just for taking photos of fireworks at night. So I really need to try it out.

Okay, yard sale fun again today...and bless my dad...we just drive around. We don't make a plan.  It's way more fun to drive around and find a surprise sale going on somewhere.  Here's what I found today at the "Beautiful Couple's" home. These are the same people who I bought the krumkake cast iron and other goodies from last week :) :) :)  I spent a total of $1.50...these people are really generous and they make the BEST signs advertising their yard sale!!!! Okay...here's what I found....
This really cute framed photo...very Americana and very cute for the 4th of July...I want to add more Americana to my home decor. It was only $0.25...a steal of a deal and really cute.  No flaws whatsoever....along the bottom edge of the picture there's some dried glue where something was once glued there. I can remove that, or I'll find something cute to glue there in it's place...Not sure yet what I'll do...but it sure is pretty...



Next up is another fabulous find...this really cute little square painting for just $0.10...and it's in perfect condition.  I could hang it up in the bathroom...but maybe I'll put in in my room.  What do you think?  Isn't it cute and vintagey and pink and cute? Oh, I said " cute" twice!!!!


These are a set of four glass bowls...probably dessert bowls. I paid only $1.00 for all four!!!!!  I don't eat a lot of dessert, but I thought these would be cute for the occasions when I eat ice cream.  Also thought about repurposing one of these as a really cute dish for hand soap!!!! Right now, I just leave the soap on the sink and I have to clean it up!!!...


This was just a little add-on for $0.15. It's a little Tupperware container that's not much bigger than a deck of cards.  I love little containers like this. They're perfect for holding change or little sewing do-dads etc...I'll probaby use it for spare buttons and things like that...since I'm always finding them and then losing them again. I can ALWAYS find a use for cute little containers like this...

UPDATE ON THE PINK DEPRESSION GLASS FOLLOWS MY "I'VE GOT THE DEPRESSION ERA GLASS BLUES" STORY..(UPDATE ADDED 2:30 p.m. Pacific Standard Time....:) :) :) So those are my yard sale finds for today...I was at this garage sale where I took the flower of the yellow roses up at the top. The lady had a really nice set of pink Depression Era glass...set of big dishes for $15 and smaller dishes for $5. I'm not sure if that was a deal or inflated prices...but it was PINK, PINK, PINK... and I didn't have the money or I would have bought them right on the spot. So folks, I have a case of the Depression Era glass blues.... I'm a little sad I couldn't buy them.  My dad says I'll find something better next time...I'm not so sure about that, not when it comes to Depression Era glass!!!!

I am very  happy with what I did purchase. Everything is useful and will add a touch of feminine vintage romantic country rustic charm to my home...It's all that and a bag of chips!!!! I love it all!!!  I love how God provides for my needs...and more than my needs within a teeny tiny budget. I don't know about you ladies...I love a great deal...even more so because I have "champagne" tastes and I'm living on a soda pop can budget. Oh, I don't drink...but I like nice things...that's what I mean by "champagne" tastes!!!

Okay, so my dad were already done shopping at the grocery store and yardsales by about 11a.m. this morning...give or take a few minutes...by now it was about 12:30p.m. and I was still thinking about that pink glass and still in a bit of a funk...I hardly ever get that way about purchases that I pass on...usually I"m grateful later that I didn't buy these things. However, my dad offered to go back to the garage sale that had the beautiful yellow rose bushes in front.  It was really hot...and the lady had the yard sale in her backyard where it was shady. I'm telling you, don't pass on those yard sales that don't look like much....you'd be surprised at the treasures that you find.  So I asked the lady if she still had the pink Depression Era glass plates...Yes, she did....choruses of Hallelujah inserted here :) :) :)

There was one saucer place...about the size of a saucer or maybe for dinner roll or something...for $5 and two salad-plate or Apricot sized plates for $7 each or $15 for the whole thing. I didn't get cash because I wanted to get my hands on those plates before anyone else did.  I asked her if she would take a check.  She said she needed cash, but she'd sell all three to me for $10.  I thought that was a bit spendy and wasn't sure if it was the real thing or not...but I took a chance and it definitely looks old and well loved and well used...So my dad went to the store and got cash for me...came back and we paid the lady $10.  After I got home, I googled "Pink Depression Glass" and found out that I have Princess pink Depression era glass plates by Anchor. Click here for one reference or click here and here for a couple more.  Based on the prices these are selling for in eBay...I did VERY, VERY WELL.  Take a look at what I bought below....

I'll get measurements for the plates later and post another update tonight.  I'm very happy with my finds. The lady who was selling these asked if I was a collector. I said "not at all".  I don't know anything about collecting...I just like anything that's romantic, vintage, country, rustic, Victorian etc. She said "Anytime you buy 3 or more pieces, you're a collector. You're a collector now"...we both smiled. She also asked me if I was going to display them or use them....definitely USE the plates for sure. That's the whole point of buying them...beautiful and useful!!!  She was selling these on behalf of a friend. The friend had them for years and didn't know what to do with them. I guess they belonged to her grandmother. Hmm...now that I"ve done some research, I should keep my eyes out for more and other yard sales!!!

There was this little set of glass bottles that I thought were super cute...and would make cute little vases for miniature flowers...to fill nooks and crannies in my home...They stand about 2 1/2" tall each...they are tiny but adorable. All 6 for just $1....



"Beautiful yellow roses bushes" lady also threw in these two craft magazines for FREE...I offered $0.10 per magazine...as a token gesture. She said "NO"...there are some super duper craft patterns in here...the "Arts & Crafts" magazine has a fun project for pull-apart paper envelopes. Those look really adorable, easy an inexpensive to make...Maybe I'll try making some and then posting about it here.




Alrighty...that's enough for this weekend.  I'll save my left-over money for next weekend's find!!! I think I'll have to make the yard sale thing an every weekend affair...at least till the end of summer!!!! I'm proud of myself...and I'm very glad I went back for those Princess pink Depression Era glass plates. While I was waiting for my dad to come back with cash...I asked the lady about other visitors to the sale. Where there a lot of people there since my first visit earlier this morning...? Most definitely "YES".  She said it was really curious because "No one looked at the glassware...it was sitting right there out in the open...and nobody would look at it"  She said it was meant for me to have...I definitely think so. I'm not normally this insistent about a purchase...but I'm sure glad I went back to the yard sale!!!

Oh, I think I'm going to have to join Anne's Pink Saturday event...Anne, I keep finding pink things...so pretty!!!! I've fallen in love with Depression Era glassware too!!!

Lots of friends needing prayer these days...a lot of dear blog friends...God knows who they are and what the needs of their lives and hearts are...remember them in your prayers tonight!!!! Thanks a whole heap!!!!!!

365 Day Photo Challenge ~ Monday - June 28th, 2010 till Friday - July 2nd, 2010.

Good afternoon. It's a fine day in Oregon today.  It started out completely overcast with gray skies. Now there are still a few puffs of clouds floating about in the sky..and there's some bright blue skies as well with LOTS of sunshine :) :)  It's supposed to be about 71 Fahrenheit today. That's what I call a perfect summer day.

I saw some once at an antique store in Eugene...but I didn't have money to purchase them. If anyone knows where I can find more, please let me know :) :) :)

French Bath Mitt Revisited & I Was Convinced My Computer Was Broken.

Hi everyone,  I was convinced that my computer was broken last night.  It was really frustrating for sure.  I had written out my knitting instructions but Blogger wouldn't upload the photos. Needless to say I was really sad last night.  Everything is working fine now. I think God just wanted me to learn another lesson in patience.  So I'll write this out again for you all :) :)

Let me give you my short knitting history.  I taught myself how to knit while living as an exchange student in Norway years ago. There are knitting shops all over the place where I was studying. I had purchased a pair of handknit mittens and lost them during a New Year's Eve party. So instead of buying another pair, I told myself I'd learn to knit. A German friend taught me how to cast on stitches onto the knitting needle. That was hard for me..but once I figured that out, everything else was really easy.

Funny story..true story..I learned to knit in Norway..so I only knew knitting terms in Norwegian. I didn't know what any of this was called in English. So when I came back to the States I didn't know what to ask for in the knitting shop.  Fortunately the associate was able to figure out what I needed :) :) I also use the metric system when I knit. However, I'll make sure to include US measurements here for ease of understanding!!!

This is the type of yarn I use quite a bit. It's Lily Sugar 'n Cream (super size) - 2.5 oz (70.9 grams). It's 100% cotton and a real workhorse,...especially if you're making household items with it...and even if it's for fun things...it's a great, inexpensive yarn to work worth. I bought mine at Joann's Fabrics...but I've also seen this brand of yarn at Michael's and Craft World.

Some supplies that you'll need to get started:
Cotton yarn (I used Lily Sugar 'n Cream 2.5 oz)
5 double pointed knitting needles - 3.5 mm(US 4)
1 double pointed knitting needle - 4.5mm (US 7)
~ I use a slightly larger knitting needle for casting on. I'll explain why in just a moment.
Row marker
Row Counter
Notebook and pen or pencil
Tape measure

Finished size - 5 inches wide x 7 inches high

"Always" knit a gauge swatch first. I put that in "quotations"..because I don't always do that. It's not always necessary..and I'm a bit of a rebel knitter. However, for this project you should do that.

In my case I knit a swatch 24 stitches long by 24 rows. It gives me a nice surface area to measure just how many stitches I knit per inch. Here I knit with the 3.5 mm knitting needles and came up with 5 stitches per inch.  Since I'm knitting this mitt in the round..it's 5 inches wide...but it's ACTUALLY 10 inches in the round. So 5 stitches per inch times 10 inches is 50 total stitches to cast on!!!

There's a trick I learned to figure out how much of a yarn tail I need to cast on.  The general rule of thumb is 4-5 times the finished width..in this case I'm knitting 10 inches in the round...so I'm going to use a 50 inch yarn tail. I always use a little more because I like to have an easy time weaving in the ends when I'm finished with the project.

At the 50 inch point you'll want to wrap the yarn over your fingers..from front to back as seen in the photo below..

Those are my hands in the photos. No, I don't bite my nails. ..but I do cut them really short. It makes it much easier to type.  I've though about trying really short acrylic nails sometime..but that'll have to wait until my wallet fattens up a bit.  So there you see my tanned hands in all their glory...My dad helped me with the photos:) :)

..you'll want to bring the yarn back behind your fingers again..until you end up with a loop like the one pictures in the photo below..

Take the 4.5mm (US 7) double pointed knitting needle and insert it into the loop as shown in the next photo...Gently pull tighter until the loop is fitting snug around the knitting needle.  Now you'll notice that you have to lines of yarn..one with the tail end and the other coming from the skein of yarn itself. Make sure that the tail end of the yarn is around your thumb and the other is around your pointer finger....Look at the next TWO photos as a reference point :)

I always use a slightly larger knitting needle to cast on.  It adds some elasticity to your project and prevents it from being too tight at the bottom.  don't worry about it being too loose. As you're knitting, it will naturally tighten up on it's own. Now that you're holding the yarn in your left hand as seen below...take the knitting needle and go under the outeryarn around your thumb...and pick up that string...

Now move that knitting needle towards the inner loop around your pointer finger..go just to the right of that inner string...go under and pick up that yarn..

Pull that string through the loop created on your thumb..

Pull gently and tighten loop around knitting needle. You've just cast on your first knit stitch.  Repeat those steps until you've cast on as many stitches as you'll be needing for your project.

Everyone will knit a little bit differently...so it's always important to measure your gauge when you knit that test swatch. You may need to use a slightly larger or smaller set of knitting needles.  It doesn't really matter as long as the finished size is 5in wide by 7in high...and even there, you can manipulate it if you want...to fit different hand shapes!!

I cast on 50 stitches for my project (Five stitches per inch).  Now switch to the 3.5 mm(US 4) double pointed knitting needles and divide evenly among the four needles. In this case 4 doesn't divide evenly into 50..so I just put 12 stitches on needles 1 and 2..and 13 stitches on needles 3 and 4.  I ALWAYS use four needles and knit in with the fifth..ALWAYS...It's more common to  use this many needles in Europe, than it is in the States.  The reason for this is that it gives you a nice "round" shape and there's less stress and tension at the corners!!! you're project will look nicer!!! Make sure the ridge created while casting on..that ridge should be pointing in the same direction...towards the inside/down..otherwise you might end up knitting a mobius.

Let slip the stich from the left needle and you've just knit your first stitch. It's that easy...truly...because you're knitting in the round that's the only stitch you use in this entire pattern.

I use a combo row marker/counter.  I place it one stitch in from the beginning of my row. I count the number of rows that I knit...and write everything down...so that if I want to make this later...and I don't feel like knitting a gauge swatch, I can refer to my notes.  I'm fairly true to size when I knit, so for a project like this I don't worry too much.
I also put anything like knitting patterns, recipes etc into a sketchbook artists journal that I have. I'm creating a cute little book that I can pass down to my kids someday that will have all my favorite/useful tips in it!!! I'll see about posting a photo of that tomorrow!!!

Keep on knitting in the round until the piece measures 7 inches from the bottom. Then divide up the stitches evenly between two double pointed needles.  I knit the first stich of the front and back needles TOGETHER...knit the next two stitches of the front and back needles together..then I take the knitting needle in my left hand..insert it into the first stitch made and slip it OVER the second stitch.  I knit another two stiches together...and repeat that process..slip that first stitch over the second stitch..as you do this it'll close up your kn itting project by creating a seam!!!  When you get to the very last stiches, knit as usual and then just pull the yarn th rough and create a knot.  Cut the thread...pull the yarn through to the wrong side with a yarn needle. I just weave in any loose ends...and this is what it looks like when it's finished...

That's how you knit a French bath mitt...a real simple one.  it's really easy and my instructions don't do justice to how easy this pattern really is. Tomorrow I'll show you some of the knitting books I use as references if I'm not sure about something...Plus, I'll show you the books that I learned to knit with while I lived in Norway...

Last night I really wasn't in the mood to listen...but it was like I felt God telling me, just let it go and go to sleep and try again in the morning.  I don't have to finish everything TODAY. Well, I went to bed, woke up, and tried uploading my photos again. Blogger is working great today.

My Photos Won't Upload Today.. ( :( :( :(

Okay, I'd spent all day working on a nice knitting post..and not a single one of my photos will upload.  I'm not sure what's wrong..and I"m kind of sad about that... It says blogger can't upload my photos at all...try again later. Has that every happened to any of you?
